Applicants should choose Common Entry if they are undecided on their speciality and can decide on their degree option at the end of Year 2. Applicants that select a specific degree option at CAO stage are guaranteed a place on that programme, subject to meeting the entry requirements and points. All applicants may change their selection up to the end of Year 2 and must confirm specialism at this point.

Business touches on almost every aspect of modern human society and careers in business are diverse and often highly rewarding. At undergraduate level students can gain a foundation in key areas of the business world, before choosing a specialisation. Digital marketing plays an increasingly important role, involving most areas of business including, branding, public relations, publishing and customer engagement.

Common Entry
This four-year honours degree programme equips students with a broad skill-base ensuring graduates will have a wide range of career options. The first two years of this programme provides students with a foundation in business, with some electives. After two years, students decide on their chosen area of specialism.

Digital Marketing
The Digital Marketing stream is for graduates who are interested in a career in business with specialist skills in digital marketing. The digital marketing option develops specialist technical skills and knowledge including e-business, digital media design and marketing management.

Business
The Business stream provides graduates with a broad-based Bachelor of Business (Honours) structured around management, finance and economics, business technology and marketing. There is a strong emphasis on the application of knowledge and skills in an international context, through modules such as international business; european economics and innovative business.

Business Common Entry (Options in Business & Digital Marketing)

This course equips students with the applied skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in a variety of areas such as commercial activity, entrepreneurship, public service, government and the not-for-profit sector. The course is structured around four key pillars – management, finance/economics, business technology and marketing.

Course Structure
The first two years of this programme provide students with a foundation in business, with some electives. After two years, students decide on their chosen area of specialism in either Business or Business with Digital Marketing. Depending on your choice and your areas of interest there are also electives are available in Commercial Law, Fund Accounting and Global Economics.

In Year 3, you will also undertake a professional work placement where you will put your learning into practice and gain practical experience.

Tourism and Event Management

Tourism is one of Ireland’s most important and growing economic sectors, supporting jobs on both national and international level. Festivals and events are critical for tourism growth as they specifically attract both domestic and overseas visitors to Ireland and contribute significantly to the economy every year. Event management has become an integral element of the Irish tourism offering. Demand is growing for high-calibre graduates who have the necessary skills to develop their careers in this exciting industry.

Course Structure
The course combines tourism and event modules with a strong business, entrepreneurial and research focus. From project management, to designing websites, to understanding key management issues relating to events in the tourism sector, this course equips students with the required knowledge and skill set to develop careers in this area.

Marketing

The MBS (Marketing Stream) facilitates students in developing a keen critical awareness of core business concepts, as well as allowing them to specialise in contemporary marketing theory and practice. Emphasis is placed on integrating key theoretical developments, with an ability to critically analyse and apply this theory in live business situations. Particular focus is given to the rapidly emerging and evolving area of digital marketing and business analytics. Graduates of the MBS (Marketing Stream) will develop knowledge and skills of contemporary marketing practice, and an ability to apply it in a “real-world” environment.

The MBS (Marketing Stream) is one-year full time or two-years part time taught programme aimed at preparing graduates for marketing and sales careers within organisations. Through our interactions with companies, SETU Waterford School of Business has identified a need to provide an innovative and practice-based marketing programme which will prepare graduates for roles in marketing, branding, product development, sales, market research and international sales practice. The course was developed in collaboration with key stakeholders such as the South East branch of the Marketing Institute of Ireland and partner companies from the region including Glanbia and Flahavans.

The course addresses a clear need for graduates skilled in the application of specialist marketing techniques. Graduates are equipped with the expertise to trade domestically and internationally, create and execute advertising campaigns, collect and analyse data relating to market opportunities, manage customer relationships, develop and execute digital marketing strategies, and participate in the viability testing and launch of new product concepts.

The Master of Business (Marketing Stream) is distinguished by the depth and breadth of the theoretical and practice based material addressed. Human Resource Management

The MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) is customised for the modern business climate, which demands a dynamic and flexible approach to management and an increased emphasis on fostering a knowledge-based economy. In this setting the importance of employees, and consequently the human resource function, has never been greater. Employees are increasingly viewed as the critical determinant of an organisations success and thus the professional management of people takes centre stage. The MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) is designed to provide graduates with the opportunity to enhance their specialist subject knowledge in HR whilst gaining a deeper knowledge of key contemporary issues prevailing in the business environment. Candidates will experience innovative learning methods, undertake practical assignments and acquire key competencies and skills to help them advance their career. Emphasis is placed on developing skills of critical thinking, analysis, debate, dealing with high levels of ambiguity and the simultaneous treatment of inter dependent decisions in a more complex environment. Students achieve this through participation in class activities and through involvement in a series of events including those organised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The School of Business at SETU Waterford is an accredited centre for the CIPD professional body and the MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) awards associate membership of the CIPD and with one year’s relevant experience Chartered member of CIPD (MCIPD) which is a global qualification.

Business in Supply Chain Management

This one-year graduate diploma programme has been designed for graduates of business and non-business disciplines in order to equip them with the necessary knowledge and competencies in Supply Chain Management and business.

Supply Chain Management is concerned with the management of the flow of goods and information through the value chain, from materials acquisition to final consumption. Put more simply, SCM is about being right: it is about getting the right product, in the right quantity, at the right quality, in the right place at the right time, for the right consumer at the right cost. In achieving all of this, supply chain management takes on many of the functions of a business including: forecasting, inventory management, purchasing management, warehouse management, information technology and transport management. Management professionals in logistics and supply chain management functions also work closely with other areas of the business including human resource management, manufacturing, marketing and finance.

What will I be able to do when I finish this course?
Graduates of this programme will find employment opportunities in all manufacturing sectors including: electronics; pharmaceuticals and food processing – as buyers and material planners. Many opportunities also exist in logistics and distribution. This work involves using sophisticated computerised planning tools such as MRP/ERP, interacting and negotiating with external suppliers and internal customers and contributing to project management as members of cross-functional teams.

Economics & Finance

The Master of Business (Economics and Finance Stream) is a challenging one-year taught programme aimed at preparing graduates for a career in finance or in economics. The course was developed in response to demand from financial service companies for specialist graduates with advanced skills and knowledge in areas such as econometrics, financial derivatives, data analytics and advanced financial analysis and interpretation. The course was developed in collaboration with companies in the financial services sector with the aim of producing high quality graduates with quantitative and analytical skills who would have a capability to work in specialist roles in economics and finance.

The delivery of the programme incorporates lectures, workshops by leading financial experts, a dedicated seminar programme on topics relating to finance and economics and visits to financial services companies. Additional practice-based training is provided in key skills areas such as econometrics, derivatives, analytics and corporate financial interpretation. Students receive specialised training in quantitative financial methods, business simulation and monetary economics and use the full range of financial software that is available to students within the Business School including Thomson One Banker, StockTrak and Financial Times.

Management

The Management stream is designed to enable students to develop a broad set of conceptual, technical and interpersonal skills required to manage efficiently and effectively in a global business environment. This stream has been developed to respond to current industry skills needs. The stream offers students the scope and opportunity to enhance their management development capabilities and facilitate improvements in management practices within companies. There are significant employment and promotion opportunities at management level for graduates from this stream.

Interaction Design

Interaction design focuses on shaping things for people’s use and behaviour and includes designing interactive digital products, environments, visual communication systems, and services. Interaction design utilises our growing understanding of design psychology and complex systems to design interactions that allowing the user to complete the desired tasks within real environments of operation.

This programme designed for honours graduates or early career professionals in product and industrial design, multimedia and game design, visual communication design, architecture, engineering and other design related fields who have a specific interest in designing robust, usable and useful human to system interactions.

This Masters programme has been developed by South East Technological University in consultation with industry and is delivered though a blended learning approach of condensed onsite delivery and self-directed learning supported by online resources within the structured environment of a taught programme.

The aim is to provide maximum flexibility for learners to balance their studies with their other work and life commitments. The programme is centred around the development and delivery of a major project which can be either theory based or rooted in the learners current working practices.
