Sports Rehabilitation and Athletic Therapy

This course focuses on the prevention, assessment and diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries related to physical activities.

Course Structure
This course equips students with the skills to manage the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injured individuals by offering a unique blend of academic theory, practical workshops and clinical placements in the final year. Students on this course enjoy state-of-the-art facilities with an elite gym and a fully equipped dedicated rehabilitation unit.

Nutrition & Exercise Science

The BSc (Hons) in Nutrition & Exercise Science is a full-time, four year, honours degree course of study that can be chosen within the Exercise Sciences Common Entry Route. The Nutrition and Exercise Science pathway will give graduates the knowledge and skills to work with individual athletes and teams to optimise nutritional intake. They will also have the knowledge and skills to assist the general population in following healthy eating guidelines and achieving a healthy body weight. The final two years of the programme will be built on a broad-based exercise science education in physiology, biomechanics, psychology, nutrition and dietary assessment, physical activity, strength and conditioning and exercise programming.

At the end of the programme, graduates will be able to:

Assess the specific nutritional needs of various athletic populations

Undertake a comprehensive dietary intake analysis

Assist athletic populations in altering dietary intake and dietary planning to optimise performance, during training and around competition

Assist the general population in following healthy eating guideline and achieving a health bodyweight

Advise on the use of supplements

Assist athletes, coaches and the general public in distinguishing fact from fiction with reference to the nutrition research literature

Professional Social Care Practice

Social care professionals provide vital support, advocacy and care to some of the most vulnerable and marginalised groups in society including: people with disabilities, children and families at risk, asylum seekers, people with addiction, mental health issues and the elderly. The course provides graduates with the skills and expertise to work in the social care profession and work across this diverse sector, in fields such as residential care, disability and community-based services.

Course Structure
SETU Carlow’s strong links to practice facilitates students in professional practice placements throughout the course, further developing their professional skills and knowledge for future employment in areas of social care, social policy and social justice.

A variety of teaching, learning and assessment methodologies are used such as discussions, group projects, placements, facilitations, poster displays, problem-based learning and case studies.

Recreation & Sport Management

The Bachelor of Business in Recreation and Sport Management is a 4-year honours degree course. This degree is for students who love sport but are unsure what area of sport they would like to work in. Our unique course is equal part business and sport. The programme is designed to give our students a wide knowledge base through classroom-based learning, practical classes in our state-of-the-art facilities and real-world experience through site visits, industrial engagement, experiential learning and of course our brilliant work placement programme.

Sport as an industry is massive. This degree opens opportunities for students to work in areas such as coaching, performance analysis, sport psychology, sports facilities management, sports tourism, sports development, sport policy and governance, sport inclusion, sports participation and opportunity for all, sports marketing, sponsorship, strategic planning and business development, outdoor recreation, strength and conditioning, or take up any area in the fitness industry. Maybe you won’t end up working in sport. Maybe you will use this degree and work in the world of business – this degree offers you the opportunity to do just that.

Health Sciences (Common Entry)

The Common Entry Scheme is for students interested in Health Care as a career, but who may be unsure of what exact area of health care they would like to work in. The BSc (Hons) in Health Sciences (Common Entry) is the gateway for the two Level 8 BSc (Hons) degrees in SETU Waterford:

BSc (Hons) in Public Health and Health Promotion

In these degrees, placement experiences allow the student to experience the broad field of health care and help them choose a career path they feel passionate about.

Student Study Advisor
All students are assigned a study advisor, a lecturer from the Department, and are encouraged to link with this advisor to discuss programme progress and any issues including programme options and career opportunities. This support offers the opportunity to ask detailed questions and get individual guidance as to which discipline they could pursue. From second year onwards the student chooses to study either applied health care or health promotion and public health.

Health & Exercise Science

The BSc (Hons) in Health and Exercise Science is a full-time, four year, honours degree course of study that can be chosen within the Exercise Sciences Common Entry Route. It is the successor programme of the BA (Hons) in Exercise and Health Studies. The BSc (Hons) in Health and Exercise Science combines the disciplines of exercise science and physical activity. The Health and Exercise Science programme will give graduates the knowledge and skills needed to assist the general population, distinct population groups and those with health problems as they engage in physical activity and structured exercise programmes.

The programme is built on a broad-based exercise science education in physiology, biomechanics, psychology, nutrition, physical activity, strength and conditioning and exercise programming.

At the end of the programme, graduates will be able to:

Evaluate physiological function, fitness, physical activity and well-being in a range of population groups including aged individuals and those with health problems

Develop and lead exercise programmes for these specialist groups

Apply psychological and behavioural change techniques to promote programme adherence and increase physical activity

Devise, implement and evaluate initiatives to increase physical activity and participation, targeting a variety of population groups in a variety of settings

Assist in distinguishing fact from fiction with reference to the fitness research literature

Programme features
Awards
REPS Ireland recognised fitness instructor awards are built into the programme, including Fitness Instruction, Group Fitness Instruction, Personal Training and Exercise for Health Specialist. Awards up to Personal Training can be obtained by the end of year 2.

Facilities
Laboratories and apparatus available for practical classes and research projects include 3 human performance laboratories, dance studios, a high-performance gym, a DEXA body composition analyser and ActivPal physical activity motion sensors. A number of classes are delivered in the teaching and laboratory facilities of the SETU Waterford ARENA.

Work Placement
A 16-week work placement offers supervised experience in a fitness, special needs or physical activity promotion environment. The Department has an extensive network of placement opportunities that include:

Physical Activity Officers for people with a disability, older adults or in community settings

Experiencing cardiac rehabilitation in regional hospitals

Sports Development Officers with Local Sports Partnerships to promote participation in physical activity

Personal Trainers in community and private enterprises

Health and Exercise Specialists in workplaces, charities and NGB’s of sport.

Business Management

Business touches on almost every aspect of modern human society and careers in business are diverse and often highly paid. At undergraduate level students can gain a foundation in many of these aspects of the business world, before choosing a specialisation.

In the Business Management option, Year 3 students will study specialist subjects in more detail including: Business Research Methods; Organisational Behaviour; Operations Management; Business Finance; International Business and more. Additional specialist subjects can be chosen depending on the student’s area of interest.

Business (Honours) Common Entry

A Common Entry course is a popular choice for students who have an interest in a discipline but are unsure of what career path they would like to follow. Common Entry courses allow students to study a broad range of subjects initially and then choose their preferred specialist area after 2 years. The advantage of this course type is that it allows students more time to discover the subjects in which they are most interested.

Course Structure
Bachelor of Business (Honours) and Bachelor of Business courses equip students with a broad business skill-base, ensuring graduates will have a wide range of career options. The first two years of this course provide students with a foundation in business, and subjects are common for all students. This allows students time to explore the future career choices open to graduates in the different specialism streams. Expert guidance will be available from lecturing staff and ultimate choices can then be considered in light of academic performance across a range of business subject areas.

After two years, students choose their preferred stream of study.

• Business Management
This option equips students with the management knowledge, skill and competencies demanded by modern day business. Graduates may find employment as part of a management team in any sector such as banking, industry, public sector, financial services and many more.

Sport, Business and Coaching

What is the Course about?
This new degree combines the techniques of sports management and coaching with the principles of business and management.

The field of sports management and coaching is changing rapidly. All sporting bodies require management and coaching staff to have an excellent understanding of their chosen sport, as well as strong business and organisational and administrative skills.

On completion of the course, students will have a detailed understanding of:

Athletic development
Coach education
Strength and conditioning
Sport finance
Sport media and marketing
Students will also have the opportunity to take elective modules in key areas such as:

Is this course for you?
This course is open to students from any sporting background who are passionate about playing and/or coaching their sport. It will also be of interest to someone who would like a career in the business and administration of sport. The course prepares you for the workplace with work placement in semester 2 of Year 3. This is further enhanced by engagement with commercial and not for profit sporting bodies in planning events and examining the strategic direction of the organisation. This gives the student experience of organisations which they may be employed by in the future.

It is open to students of all abilities and not just those in an elite category.
