The Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting and Financial Service is a multi-purpose level 9 programme designed to equip learners with advanced knowledge of accounting, financial services and related business sub-disciplines (data analytics), as well as offering opportunities for the development of a unique blend of specialised professional and research skills for employability, life-long learning, professional formation, and postgraduate study.

Marketing

The MBS (Marketing Stream) facilitates students in developing a keen critical awareness of core business concepts, as well as allowing them to specialise in contemporary marketing theory and practice. Emphasis is placed on integrating key theoretical developments, with an ability to critically analyse and apply this theory in live business situations. Particular focus is given to the rapidly emerging and evolving area of digital marketing and business analytics. Graduates of the MBS (Marketing Stream) will develop knowledge and skills of contemporary marketing practice, and an ability to apply it in a “real-world” environment.

The MBS (Marketing Stream) is one-year full time or two-years part time taught programme aimed at preparing graduates for marketing and sales careers within organisations. Through our interactions with companies, SETU Waterford School of Business has identified a need to provide an innovative and practice-based marketing programme which will prepare graduates for roles in marketing, branding, product development, sales, market research and international sales practice. The course was developed in collaboration with key stakeholders such as the South East branch of the Marketing Institute of Ireland and partner companies from the region including Glanbia and Flahavans.

The course addresses a clear need for graduates skilled in the application of specialist marketing techniques. Graduates are equipped with the expertise to trade domestically and internationally, create and execute advertising campaigns, collect and analyse data relating to market opportunities, manage customer relationships, develop and execute digital marketing strategies, and participate in the viability testing and launch of new product concepts.

Human Resource Management

The MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) is customised for the modern business climate, which demands a dynamic and flexible approach to management and an increased emphasis on fostering a knowledge-based economy. In this setting the importance of employees, and consequently the human resource function, has never been greater. Employees are increasingly viewed as the critical determinant of an organisations success and thus the professional management of people takes centre stage. The MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) is designed to provide graduates with the opportunity to enhance their specialist subject knowledge in HR whilst gaining a deeper knowledge of key contemporary issues prevailing in the business environment. Candidates will experience innovative learning methods, undertake practical assignments and acquire key competencies and skills to help them advance their career. Emphasis is placed on developing skills of critical thinking, analysis, debate, dealing with high levels of ambiguity and the simultaneous treatment of inter dependent decisions in a more complex environment. Students achieve this through participation in class activities and through involvement in a series of events including those organised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The School of Business at SETU Waterford is an accredited centre for the CIPD professional body and the MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) awards associate membership of the CIPD and with one year’s relevant experience Chartered member of CIPD (MCIPD) which is a global qualification.

Data Science

The MSc in Data Science NFQ Level 9 programme is designed to meet current industry needs and provides students with a thorough theoretical and practical grounding in the analysis and utilisation of large data sets, together with experience in conducting data science development projects, thereby preparing graduates for positions of responsibility in the Big Data and IT industries.

As well as studying a range of core taught modules, learners will undertake a significant research and/or programming project to further enhance their skillset from the creation of a project proposal to the delivery and deployment of a significant data science project.

This innovative programme will build on participants’ professional and personal skills in areas such as presentation, communication and soft skills as well as data science development, integration and critical thinking around the design, implementation and deployment of data science solutions and systems in industry.

What will I be able to do when I finish this programme?
The aim of this programme is to provide learners with an understanding and ability to critically evaluate and utilise data analytics and the associated processes, systems, algorithms, technologies and insights garnered, ethically, in appropriate contexts. The programme also focuses on current research in the field and enables participants to review and critically assess this research.

Economics & Finance

The Master of Business (Economics and Finance Stream) is a challenging one-year taught programme aimed at preparing graduates for a career in finance or in economics. The course was developed in response to demand from financial service companies for specialist graduates with advanced skills and knowledge in areas such as econometrics, financial derivatives, data analytics and advanced financial analysis and interpretation. The course was developed in collaboration with companies in the financial services sector with the aim of producing high quality graduates with quantitative and analytical skills who would have a capability to work in specialist roles in economics and finance.

The delivery of the programme incorporates lectures, workshops by leading financial experts, a dedicated seminar programme on topics relating to finance and economics and visits to financial services companies. Additional practice-based training is provided in key skills areas such as econometrics, derivatives, analytics and corporate financial interpretation. Students receive specialised training in quantitative financial methods, business simulation and monetary economics and use the full range of financial software that is available to students within the Business School including Thomson One Banker, StockTrak and Financial Times.

Sustainable Energy Engineering

This programme has been designed to facilitate professionals practicing in the areas of building design, management and technology. Its’ purpose is to provide expertise in terms of; energy use, environmental performance and sustainability in the design and operation of buildings and their associated facilities and services systems.

The programme will focus on Sustainable and Low energy building design; Building energy performance and analysis; Dynamic thermal simulation; Low and zero carbon heat and power generation technologies; Energy policy and legislation; Energy auditing; Facilities management and Building pathology and investigation.

The knowledge, skills and competencies that participants will gain are relevant to their career development. This programme is developed to meet the Level 9 criteria as set out by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI). The treatment of all programme subjects will encourage the development of powers of analysis, of synthesis and of communication. This will be achieved by building upon both the undergraduate studies and postgraduate experience of participants to develop a broader understanding of low energy building design and management. In addition the selection of a research topic for a dissertation will allow the student to concentrate on one or more of these directions.

The Masters degree requires successful completion of twelve mandatory modules. The student must also complete an applied programme consisting of a Research Dissertation and an Industrial Research seminar series.

Digital Media with Business Analytics

Digital Media is now an integrated part of all areas of the digital landscape. Covering areas from traditional graphic design and web and digital media, but also now a key skill in all forms of marketing, business and data analysis.

Technology and its seamless integration into our lives has now caused an increased need for well designed information and assets, delivered in a bespoke, market focused format.

Analytics, and information and the use of data, is now a major role in the digital landscape. Understanding data, retrieval, processing and presentation of data is a highly sought after skillset, across many if not all areas of business world.

This programme aims to marry these two skills together, and create a learner that is highly skilled in the area of Digital Media Design with an in-depth knowledge of Business Analytics.

The graduate will possess the ability and key skills needed to engage, create, and communicate information to a consumer driven market.

Interaction Design

Interaction design focuses on shaping things for people’s use and behaviour and includes designing interactive digital products, environments, visual communication systems, and services. Interaction design utilises our growing understanding of design psychology and complex systems to design interactions that allowing the user to complete the desired tasks within real environments of operation.

This programme designed for honours graduates or early career professionals in product and industrial design, multimedia and game design, visual communication design, architecture, engineering and other design related fields who have a specific interest in designing robust, usable and useful human to system interactions.

This Masters programme has been developed by South East Technological University in consultation with industry and is delivered though a blended learning approach of condensed onsite delivery and self-directed learning supported by online resources within the structured environment of a taught programme.

The aim is to provide maximum flexibility for learners to balance their studies with their other work and life commitments. The programme is centred around the development and delivery of a major project which can be either theory based or rooted in the learners current working practices.

This Masters programme sits within the Department of Humanities at South East Technological University which facilitates the culture of interdisciplinary design lead research and learning. Through blended onsite and online delivery, the programme facilitates undertaking the programme as part of a work based continued professional development.

Innovative Technology Engineering

The Masters in Innovative Technology Engineering degree aims to produce graduates with strong skills in critical thinking and with a creative attitude necessary to instigate future developments in the field of Engineering Technology. The student will attain an academic mastery in their specialisation field while developing a broad knowledge of other related fields and how these converge.

The student will embark on a programme that will assess and analyse a number of emerging technologies and the developing potential for the convergence of these technologies. The course aims to prepare students for a rewarding career in industry or academic research. In addition, the course will facilitate for them the development of a set of personal and professional attributes that will allow them greater flexibility in the development of their own career options. The programme is designed to develop the student’s knowledge and skills in strategies for innovation management, product design and development and optimum routes to market. The student will also carry out post-graduate level research of industrial relevance in selected topic areas.

The Masters degree requires successful completion of twelve modules. The student must also complete an industrially aligned and relevant Research Dissertation”

Electronic Engineering

The Masters Degree in Electronic Engineering provides tuition and practice in state of the art technology areas such as wireless communications, nanotechnology, mixed-signal IC design. It will extend the student’s capabilities in a number of established topic areas, e.g. semiconductor engineering and digital communication systems.

A module entitled Mathematical Modelling will enhance the analytical skills of students while important engineering management skills will be dealt with in the Technology Management module. The programme is designed to develop the student’s knowledge and skills through a study programme which links theory and practice.

The programme will also provide students with experience of carrying out post-graduate level research in selected topic areas. The Masters degree requires successful completion of ten compulsory modules and two out of four elective modules. The student must also complete an applied programme consisting of the design project plus dissertation, the mini-project and the workshop seminar series
