Obstetrics
The Human Biology Building is a four-storey
recently opened building with a gross floor
area of 8,200m² housing the disciplines of
Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology
and Therapeutics. The purpose of the
building is to provide a facility in which all of
these disciplines are within a research-led
environment and to:
• Deliver core preclinical curricula to Medical
and Health Science students;
• Deliver core curricula to Science,
Biomedical Science and Engineering
students;
• Provide a venue for postgraduate taught
masters degrees;
• Provide a venue for discipline-specific
training in third and forth years.
The building has been designed as a teaching
and research facility with accommodation
including undergraduate teaching
laboratories, research laboratories, offices,
open-plan write-up spaces, meeting rooms,
tiered lecture theatres and other ancillary
facilities. This facility has greatly enhanced
teaching and research across disciplines,
providing our students with access to cuttingedge research and learning opportunitie
Music
This course combines the study of
music with one other arts subject.
• It allows students to develop an
understanding of the history, theory
and practice of music.
• This course is ideal for those who
wish to teach music at second level
after graduation and for anyone
interested in gaining first-hand
experience of music-centred
employment.
• Our students benefit from our
partnerships with Galway Music
Residency and the ConTempo
Quartet, Music for Galway and the
renowned Irish Traditional Musician
Sharon Shannon. Students will have
regular workshops with performers,
developing such skills as critical
listening, analysis and concert
reviewing.
Psychology
You will have an opportunity
to develop insights into both
yourself and those around
you. This will promote your
personal development and your
understanding of the human
condition.

in your chosen career and means
that graduates of Psychology are
highly sought after across a range
of sectors.
• Graduates of our Joint-Honours
offering can apply to complete
the Higher Diploma in Psychology
(Conversion), which confers
eligibility for graduate membership
of the Psychological Society of
Ireland, the professional body for
psychologists in Ireland.
Performing Arts Studies
This is a world-class, four-year
course that allows students to study
drama, theatre and performance
together with one other arts subject.
• Students explore a variety of topics,
including acting, playwriting,
directing, design, theatre history,
and musical theatre.
• Our students benefit from our
partnerships with Irish theatre
companies, including the
internationally acclaimed Druid
Theatre, which provides workshops
as part of the Druid Academy
Programme. Students also have full
access to the Abbey Theatre Digital
Archive, a unique resource that
provides access to thousands of
plays and videos.
Performance and Screen Studies
This programme presents two
internationally recognised
academic disciplines—Performance
Studies and Screen Studies—and
draws them together to create a
unique subject that involves the
lecture-based study of drama, film,
television, social media, sporting
events and sports media, gaming,
streaming platforms, political
activism, and more.
• It has a strong focus on
employability through an emphasis
on skills development for the
Creative Industries, both in Ireland
and internationally.
• The programme also provides the
opportunity for students to apply
to transfer into the denominated
degree programme in Drama
after First Year (subject to exam
performance and availability of
places), should they wish to do so.
Social Sciences
This innovative four-year degree is
aimed at high-achieving students
with a passion to better understand,
appreciate, and address the crucial
contemporary social, environmental
and economic issues of our times.
• Students will participate in an
international field trip in Year Two
as well as a one-semester
internship/placement in Year Three,
gaining practical experience and
understanding of working in key
areas of social scientific research.
• This interdisciplinary degree draws
on key strengths of schools,
disciplines and research institutes
right across the University, allowing
for the synthesis of ideas from many
diverse disciplines and perspectives
to produce career-ready graduates
History
Students will explore the local
and the global past, focusing on
the histories of Ireland, Britain,
continental Europe, North America,
Australasia and Africa.
• History students can choose from
more than 50 modules and can also
study history through Irish.
• As a History student, you will be
trained in techniques that are
invaluable in numerous career
paths. You will learn how to source
information in libraries, archives
and on the internet, how to test
the accuracy of a claim against
the available evidence, and how
to formulate a coherent argument
and express it effectively—all skills
indispensable in any job.
Journalism
This course is designed to prepare
you for real-world careers in the
media, while at the same time
allowing you to complete a jointhonours degree with one other Arts
subject of your choice.
• This exciting programme allows you
to undertake practical modules in
print, online, social media, radio and
television journalism across four
years of study.
• Students have the opportunity
to engage in a professional work
placement in third year of this
course.

radio station!
Geography and Geosystems
There is a growing demand for a work
force literate in the scientific and
geographic protocols used to advance
environmental issues such as climate
change, energy use, sustainable
development, and policy.
• This programme is aimed at motivated
school leavers and mature students
with a strong interest in how natural
systems function and how the
ecosystem goods and services
provided by the environment are
impacted by human activity.
• The programme focuses on fieldbased learning to provide students
with diverse opportunities to
supplement their academic learning
with hands-on research and technical
experiences outside the classroom.
• As a graduate of this programme, you
will become an expert in humanenvironment relationships with a
focus on the spatial dynamics of the
natural world and the sustainable
management of our natural resources
Global Languages
This degree course aims to
produce graduates with a high
level of competence in at least two
languages. You can choose from
French, German, Irish, Italian
and Spanish.
• Italian is available at beginner
level, and German and Spanish are
available to both beginners and
post-Leaving Certificate students.
French and Irish are available at
post-Leaving Certificate level.
• Students can choose minors in
a range of languages or a minor
subject covering language-related
fields like translation and linguistics,
media and technology, and literature
and culture.
• Students may take short introductory
courses in Chinese and Latin.
