Media Studies (MED)
On the BA Media Studies, you’ll combine creative and
practical storytelling with the development of your critical
understanding of media, a vital skill since media industries
are constantly expanding with new platforms emerging
each year and new issues materialising like fake news.
You’ll get to research and analyse media cultures, genres
and industries as well as the role of media in society and
politics, and then you’ll apply this in your practice of media
design and production and interactive storytelling.
You’ll develop your employability and professionalism
through your exploration of media and cultural industries
and working lives.
Media Studies can be combined with Computer Science
to develop a broad expertise in Media Technologies.
Primary Teaching
The programme is closely linked with Early Childhood Education
and Care practice, and its lecturers are experienced in the
development, delivery and advocacy of Early Childhood
Education and Care. The unique partnership between Maynooth
University and Early Childhood Ireland ensures unparalleled
support in linking theory and practice for excellence in ECEC.
Work placements take place in Tusla-notified Early Childhood
Education and Care settings. Those working in the sector
may use their workplace as their placement setting. However
alternative placements are also required each year.
The Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Teaching and Learning
is a progressive Level 8 degree, supporting the development of
outstanding early childhood educators.
Applicants with Level 6 may be exempt from 1st year
Students can graduate with Level 7 qualification after 3rd year or
Level 8 qualification after 4th year.
This degree offers graduates the option of progressing their
careers in varied professional roles
Bachelor of Engineering
Bachelor of Electronic Engineering is accredited by Engineers Ireland and is recognised internationally. The five year Master of Engineering in Electronic Engineering at Maynooth University is also accredited by Engineers Ireland and meets the educational standard required to become a chartered engineer.
In MH304 Electronic Engineering, students take the same modules in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year.
In 4th year, students specialise in one of the following three options:
Electronic Engineering with Computers (COE)
Electronic Engineering (EEG)
Electronic Engineering with Communications (COM)
Students who achieve a 2.2 grade (50%) minimum in 3rd year may choose the MEng stream
There is a transfer pathway from 1st year MH201 Science to 2nd year MH304 Engineering for students who have taken Engineering Science, Computer Science, Mathematics and one other subject.
Bachelor of Education(Gaeltacht)
As a Single Major Bachelor of Education degree, a range of education-related topics are studied in first, second, third and fourth year.
This degree is designed to prepare students to be primary school teachers. You will take Education modules and a school-based placement across all four years of this professional teaching degree, as well as a placement in the Gaeltacht for two fortnight blocks in years two and three of the degree.
Child-centred and active approaches to teaching are central to the Froebel philosophy and permeate the ethos in the Department.
The foundation disciplines of Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and History of Education form the theoretical basis for this degree.
Education modules and school-based practice within a variety of placement settings feature across all 4 years, as well as a placement in the Gaeltacht for 2 fortnight blocks at Easter in second and third year.
Entrepreneurship
Our degree provides students with valuable insights into business
and entrepreneurship through an engaged local and international
faculty who have a wealth of experience from industry
engagement and academia.
The learning experience of this programme is designed to be
formative, creative and dynamic, providing students with both
in-class and industry engagement and learning.
Entrepreneurship students at Maynooth are offered insights into
all of the major functions of business, as well as the opportunity
to undertake specialist options in the subjects that you most
enjoy and that you feel support your development as
an entrepreneur.
Entrepreneurship students also have the option of taking a four
year degree which includes a work placement or study year
abroad *(the University’s Placement Office will support you in the
search for a placement job; however, the process is competitive).
This offers our students an opportunity to gain experience in
industry and/or learning within another culture.
Our degree also offers students a fantastic opportunity to build
their business network through academic engagement as well
as through extra-curricular engagements in our thriving societies
such as the Maynooth University Entrepreneurial Society,
ENACTUS and the Business Society.
Business with Sport Science
Unique offering: Maynooth University offers the only programme
that allows you to combine a full business degree, with four
business subject options, with sports-science.
Accredited work placement: The opportunity to undertake a fullyear work placement (subject to availability), in Ireland or abroad,
as an integral part of your degree which gives you a chance to
put your learning into practice and significantly improves your
employability upon graduation.
Employability:
This is a rapidly growing sector, with a deep demand for
graduates that bridge the fields of business and sports.
Employees that have both a deep insight into how to create value
for businesses (through Accounting, Marketing, Management or
International Business skills) and the science of sports exercise.
Follow your passion: Many enjoy sporting activities but sports and
exercise are well known to have mental and physiological benefits.
In combination with the business modules, this programme will
allow you to understand how sports and exercise can impact on
your health, allowing you to explore how this can be translated to
new services and solutions.
Marketing (MKT)
Marketing is both profoundly local and global,
selling to one individual customer or to a large
international market. Our faculty bring a rich and
diverse expertise from both local and international
markets across a broad range of topic areas,
including digital marketing, online retailing, branding,
communications and consumer behaviour. Together
we offer students deep insights into the practicalities
and applications of marketing, from what makes
customers tick to how to make the best of market
opportunities.
Our approach to Marketing provides students
with a deep understanding of the marketing
function, as well as wider management and
business processes so you can deliver value
to customers and your organisation. Options
are available which allow you to specialise
your degree according to your strengths and
interests in the topic areas you enjoy most.
Marketing students also have the option of taking
a four-year degree with a study year abroad,
thus combining what you learn in university with
insights into another culture.
Business (Marketing) can be taken with any
subject not in Group 2 e.g. Psychological Studies,
Geography, Law, Anthropology, a language
amongst others.
Professional Accounting
If you are interested in Accounting, but your undergraduate degree is not accounting-related then this programme will fast track you to becoming a professional accountant. This is a 1-year intensive conversion course designed so as to mirror in terms of standard and complexity the critical areas of the accounting syllabi of a 3-year undergraduate accounting programme.
Graduates will, on successful completion of the programme, have entitlement to CAP1 exemptions from Chartered Accountants Ireland. Successful graduates also have exemption from BT, MA, FA, LW, PM, TX, FR and FM of the ACCA professional examinations, and equivalent exemptions from other Accounting Bodies. Graduates are very well placed to enter the work force as a trainee accountant with just two sets of professional exams required to complete to qualify as a chartered accountant. Successful graduates from the programme will have an option of enrolling for the 1-year Masters in Accounting at Maynooth University, the successful completion of which, will enable them to qualify for exemption from a further level of examinations (CAP 2) of Chartered Accountants Ireland.
Science (Computer Science)
The Higher Diploma in Science (Computer Science) is a postgraduate course intended for graduates whose primary degree included 3-year’s study of Computing. On completion of the course participants would be expected to reach a level of competence equivalent to that of a four year BSc graduate in Computer Science.
Bachelor of Arts
Over the course of your three or four year degree you gain valuable skills including the hugely important ability to think critically and analytically. Our Arts graduates emerge as flexible thinkers who are ready for the challenges of the modern workplace in the years following graduation. Apart from professions requiring specialist training such as engineering and science, most career options are wide open to Maynooth’s Arts graduates. With about 40% of graduate jobs open to any discipline (gradireland.com), the quality of your degree and your ability to communicate your experience is often far more important than the content of your subjects.
