The BA in Jazz and Contemporary Music Performance at DCU is a four-year, full time Honours degree which trains you for a life as a professional performing musician. Computing
In Stage 3 of the programme, the
full-time learner will undertake a ten
month work placement in a meaningful
and relevant area in order to enhance
understanding and contextualise
studies from Stage 1 and Stage 2.
The programme is designed to embed
various transferable skills across all
modules. Skills such as teamwork,
troubleshooting, communication,
problem solving, reflective thinking and
analytical reasoning are embedded
throughout the programme.
Computing is an exciting and rapidly
developing field of study that offers
excellent employment prospects and
well-paid careers. The programme
covers the breadth of the computing
discipline incorporating core topics
of software development, database
technology, computer networking,
operating systems, computer security
and web technologies.
Computing (Cloud Computing)
At Level 8, learners will develop strong
competence in Cloud technologies,
including design and development
using technologies such as Azure,
AWS and GAE in the module on Cloud
Platform Development. The second
Level 8 module, Cloud Networking
and Security will enhance the learners
skills from their Level 7 modules by
practically deploying a cloud network
and implementing the security required
for a production model.
Computing (Data Analytics and Big Data)
Throughout the programme,
learners will experience a varied
range of teaching and learning
strategies. Modules will be delivered
through a mix of lectures and hands
on lab sessions, with tutorials in place
to support where necessary. Emphasis
will be placed on practical skills by
allowing the students to examine
problem descriptions and try possible
solutions in lab scenarios. This teaching
approach is reflected in the assessment
of modules with a mixture of individual
projects, lab based exams, group
assignments, continuous assessment
quizzes, practical skills based
assessments, reflective reports and
group project work. These assessments
will also be accompanied by end of
year examinations.
Computing (Mobile and Cloud Computing)

Computing (Software Development)
It’s a full-time four year programme delivered across 8 semesters comprised of twelve weeks each. It is also offered as a part-time five year programme comprised of ten semesters of twelve weeks each.
Year one lays the groundwork for the programme and encompasses mostly foundational modules that focus on providing a solid and comprehensive understanding of the relevant concepts such as programming fundamentals, computer architecture, information systems and mathematics and statistics for computing, introduction to web development and cloud computing.
Year two will build on the knowledge developed in year one in object-oriented programming, data communications and networks, algorithms and data structures, database systems, software engineering, web development and operating systems.
Year three will further advance learners’ knowledge and practical skills in advanced web design, systems analysis and design and introduction to data science. Year three includes a work placement component.
Year four (Award) will complete learners instruction with Cyber Security plus two modules (Mobile & Social Computing and Cloud Platform Development). In the final year, learners will complete a capstone project.
Arts in Psychology (PSI accredited)
The Higher Diploma in Arts in Psychology is for graduates who wish to pursue a professional career or postgraduate study in psychology but who don’t hold an honours degree in psychology.
The course enables students to study key areas of psychology in a thriving research environment and, through a supervised research dissertation, explore practical issues of interest and relevance to a range of theoretical and occupational fields. Students will develop a firm knowledge base in psychology and gain experience of the research process that will build upon the skills and knowledge that they have already acquired in earlier studies. The Higher Diploma represents the necessary first step to becoming a professional psychologist. Upon successful completion of the Higher Diploma, depending upon the final grade, graduates will be eligible to apply to enter postgraduate training courses in their chosen specialisation and ultimately gain employment in their area of expertise.
Students will be encouraged to consider entering their own analysis as a fundamental requirement for engagement with this field.
Aviation Finance
The Higher Diploma in Science in Aviation Finance, is underpinned by a strong foundation in leadership and emphasises the development of effective financial management skills to structure aviation leases, structured finance deals using Special Purpose Vehicles, managing aviation leases throughout the lease lifecycle, and being well positioned to contribute to the digital transformation of aviation leasing. The long-term career prospectus for those undertaking postgraduate studies in business, commerce or economics remain excellent with increasing numbers of undergraduates going onto further postgraduate studies. Demand for new aircraft continues to rise, with 17,000 aircraft estimated to be ordered globally over the next decade. This demand is being driven by passenger numbers that are predicted to double by 2030 to 73 million. An increasing critical factor in growth of the aviation industry are the aircraft lessors who now owe over 40% of the world’s fleet (versus 25% in 2000). Of the world’s top aircraft lessors, a remarkable 14 are based in Ireland. It is estimated that an Irish leased aircraft takes off every two seconds somewhere in the world.
Whilst this dominant market share is underpinned by the business and tax environments, it is also highly dependent on talent. As an industry focused educational institution, DBS sees itself as supporting the talent pillar of the Irish economy, and therefore Aviation Finance is a natural domain for the institution to explore the development of a new programme.
