Professional Social Care Practice

Social care professionals provide vital support, advocacy and care to some of the most vulnerable and marginalised groups in society including: people with disabilities, children and families at risk, asylum seekers, people with addiction, mental health issues and the elderly. The course provides graduates with the skills and expertise to work in the social care profession and work across this diverse sector, in fields such as residential care, disability and community-based services.

Course Structure
SETU Carlow’s strong links to practice facilitates students in professional practice placements throughout the course, further developing their professional skills and knowledge for future employment in areas of social care, social policy and social justice.

A variety of teaching, learning and assessment methodologies are used such as discussions, group projects, placements, facilitations, poster displays, problem-based learning and case studies.

Recreation & Sport Management

The Bachelor of Business in Recreation and Sport Management is a 4-year honours degree course. This degree is for students who love sport but are unsure what area of sport they would like to work in. Our unique course is equal part business and sport. The programme is designed to give our students a wide knowledge base through classroom-based learning, practical classes in our state-of-the-art facilities and real-world experience through site visits, industrial engagement, experiential learning and of course our brilliant work placement programme.

Sport as an industry is massive. This degree opens opportunities for students to work in areas such as coaching, performance analysis, sport psychology, sports facilities management, sports tourism, sports development, sport policy and governance, sport inclusion, sports participation and opportunity for all, sports marketing, sponsorship, strategic planning and business development, outdoor recreation, strength and conditioning, or take up any area in the fitness industry. Maybe you won’t end up working in sport. Maybe you will use this degree and work in the world of business – this degree offers you the opportunity to do just that.

We are all sports lovers and because of this we work in close association with the sports office in SETU Waterford, linking up with their scholarship programme. We also operate a reserved places programme for students who are excelling in their sporting endeavours (see reserved places tab).

International Management

The term “International Business” describes doing business between countries and across borders. It involves a wide variety of activities, for example, exporting products and services, dealing with foreign suppliers, operating a factory in a foreign country, marketing a product across Europe, even managing multicultural workforces. Today, it really can be said that “All business is international business!” This is especially true of Ireland, one of the most globalised countries in the world.

What is the BA (Hons) in International Business?
An important part of success in international business is an ability to interact effectively with people from other cultures and societies. The BA (Hons) International Business is a four-year programme that prepares students to live and work in an international and multicultural environment. The course provides a broad business education as well as building the knowledge, skills and sensitivities to effectively work in our multicultural world.

The third year of the Programme involves a mandatory International Placement. Every student will spend one year on placement, living in foreign country. While abroad, the student will generally study at one of School of Business’ Partner Institutes, however, the student may also complete an international work placement. The School has Partner Institutes around Europe, as well as in the USA and Canada, and even as far away as China and India. The International Placement is one of the core learning opportunities on the Programme, and for most students it is the highlight of the Programme.

Land Management in Agriculture

This one year add-on course aims to give students with BSc (Level 7) degrees in Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry the opportunity to obtain an Honours (level 8) degree in their respective disciplines. Using the invaluable expertise of both the School of Science and School of Business together with input from Teagasc, the course aims to increase the students knowledge of their respective disciplines while also improving the students business acumen.

How is the BSc (Hons) in Land Management in Agriculture structured?
The BSc (Hons) in Land Management in Agriculture is a one year add-on course that prepares students for a professional career or postgraduate education in Agriculture. The year consists of two semesters each comprising 6 modules. Some of the modules will be common to all students while other modules will be specific to their stream or discipline.

Research Project:
A research project will be carried out by each student throughout the two semesters of the add-on year. This will enable students to learn the rudiments of carrying out research and how to write up a scientific report. It may also help them to determine whether they would like to obtain a postgraduate qualification (Masters or PhD) after they graduate.

Land Management in Forestry

Legal Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies is a one-year, full time, add-on course for students who wish to seek employment in areas where law plays a prominent role.

The main aims and objectives of the programme are:

To provide specialised knowledge of specific, core law subjects, in depth.

To provide education that equips the student with legal knowledge and skills that can be applied to the legal profession and in employment generally.

To provide a broad education that equips the student with legal knowledge and skills that can be applied in further study at Level 8.

To develop the student’s capacity to evaluate and integrate knowledge, conceptual skills and competences through group work, presentations, and independent research.

To develop the student’s capacity to become a life-long, evaluative, and reflective learner.

Students who successfully complete this programme can proceed to honours degree level on the BA (Hons) in Legal Studies with Business programme. The BA (Hons) in Legal Studies with Business is approved by the Board of the Honorable Society of Kings Inns for students holding it, together with the Higher Certificate in Arts in Legal Studies and the BA in Legal Studies, provided certain conditions have been met.

Legal Studies with Business

The BA (Hons) in Legal Studies with Business is a one year add-on degree course which follows on from the BA in Legal Studies in International Trade, the BA in Legal Studies or equivalent.

Special Feature of the Programme
The interdisciplinary nature of this course caters for students who are considering entering the employment market and who are attracted not only to the possibility of a career in the legal sector but also to a career in the business sector. The mix of law and business modules offered on this programme expands the range of careers that are available to graduates once they have completed the course.

This course is approved by the Board of the Honorable Society of Kings Inns for students holding both the Higher Certificate in Arts in Legal Studies and the BA in Legal Studies.

Electives
Students who have completed the BA in Legal Studies in International Trade cannot elect EU Law. Students who have completed the BA in Legal studies must elect EU Law. The elective group of Administrative Law & Jurisprudence are only available at the discretion of the Head of Department.

Manufacturing Engineering – 1 Year add on

What is Manufacturing Engineering?
Manufacturing Engineering focuses on improving the production of items through product design, production planning, operations control, and by performing the various engineering functions in a firm that lead to more effective manufacturing processes.

What is the BSc (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering course?
The BSc (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering is a one-year level 8 follow-on course for graduates of the BEng in Manufacturing Engineering, BEng in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent level 7 programmes. The course addresses the application of computer-based technologies within lean, regulated environments in the context of smart manufacturing.

Field Trips
Industrial visits and field trips form part of this course. Presentations from past graduates and industrial visitors are a regular feature.

Projects
Projects form a very enjoyable part of the course where students have the freedom to genuinely express themselves. Many of the projects undertaken have developed into postgraduate research projects and a number of final-year students have presented their work in published papers at international conferences.

Marketing & Digital Media

Marketing is responsible for developing strategic communications and building relationships with customers. It involves researching customer needs, developing products & services that satisfy these needs and converting them into brands. We then use a combination of communications strategies such as Advertising, Sales Promotions, PR & Influencer Marketing to sell these brands to customers.

In recent years Marketing has shifted into the Digital Media sector where businesses communicate directly with customers using websites, mobile phone apps and social media. Marketing and digital media encompasses all social media platforms that connect organisations to customers and these platforms are constantly evolving as we strive to meet changing customer needs.

What is the BA (Hons) in Marketing & Digital Media?
The BA (Hons) in Marketing & Digital Media is a four year degree course, which prepares students for employment in marketing in the digital age. The first two semesters consist of general marketing and business subjects and then students study the specific marketing, advertising & media subjects from semesters 3-8.
