Quantity Surveying
Construction Projects supply the key infrastructure that is vital for the functioning of our modern society ranging from Schools to Hospitals, Houses, Apartment Buildings, Office Blocks, Factories, Warehouses, Data Centres, Shops & Retail. Quantity Surveyors manage and control all aspects of costs on a construction project. Their expertise is critical to ensuring that construction projects are completed on time and within budget.
While Measuring and Valuing construction work is at the heart of what Quantity Surveyors do, they are deeply involved in many other aspects of the construction process including Tendering and Contract Administration, Procurement of Materials and Subcontractors, Pricing of Tenders, Project Management and advising clients on contractual implication and Building Economics.
Quantity Surveyors must have a deep understanding of Construction Technology and Construction Methods. The core expertise of a Quantity Surveyor is in all aspects of the Cost of Construction and in particular Measuring and Valuing Construction Work. They will have a deep knowledge of Construction Contract Law and Administration, and strong Procurement and Negotiation skills.
Quantity Surveyors normally work for Professional Quantity Surveyor firms as part of the Design Team advising Clients or they work as quantity surveyors or estimators for Building Contracting firms that construct the projects. They may also work with Property Developers, directly for Clients as Building Procurement Managers and in a variety of other roles across the Construction Industry.
Course Structure
Our course is built around helping you to develop the key skills to become a Quantity Surveyor. You will develop a deep understanding of different Methods of Construction and Construction Technology ranging from housing to complex commercial and industrial developments. Central to the course are subjects to develop your expertise in the core quantity surveying costing skills of Measurement and Valuing of Building Work, Pricing, Estimating and Building economics. You will learn about the Legal Aspects of Construction Contracts and how to administer them. Other important subject areas you will study include Project Management, Procurement and Negotiation Skills.
We believe in Learning by Doing. In addition to lectures, we place a strong emphasis on the practical application of what you have learned. You will develop your skills through working on Individual and Team Projects that are focussed on real construction situations.
Quantity Surveyors increasingly rely on sophisticated computer software and technology to assist them in their work. You will develop and practice your skills in the use of the leading-edge technology and software packages that are used in the industry.
A key part of the course is the industrial placement in the second semester of Year 3 where you will spend 6 months working in the industry.

Human Resource Management
Human Resource Management (HRM) is the function within an organisation that focuses on managing people. The objective is having the right people in the right place at the right time. The HRM function deals with recruiting and selecting employees, appraising their performance, deciding what rewards are appropriate, providing suitable training and development opportunities, and providing mechanisms for reducing and avoiding conflicts. Managing people is challenging and the course assists with building a work environment where employees are more motivated.

In the Human Resource Management option at Year 3, students will study specialist HR subjects in more detail including: Contemporary Issues in HRM, People Management Functions, Employment Law and Organisational Behaviour. In Year 4 in addition to other modules, students will study Applied HRM, Industrial Relations and Strategic HRM.
Finance and Accounting
Accounting focuses on the day-to-day management of financial reports and records across the business world, while finance uses the same information to project further growth and to analyse expenditure in order to strategise company finances. Combining these areas gives an overview of financial strategy and control, while providing focus on professional principles and processes used in order to manage numbers.
Course Structure
This is a four-year Level 8 course with 60 ECTS per annum, with the final two years concentrating on exemptions for the professional accounting bodies. There are ten modules in each of Years 1, 2 and 3, and twelve modules in Year 4. Your final overall classification will be based on a combination of your Year 3 (1/3) and Year 4 (2/3) results.
Laws
The LLB is a traditional law degree offering a curriculum of core and elective law subjects. Students are encouraged and supported in acquiring skills in legal analysis, legal research and written and oral communication. The course seeks to impart a sound understanding of law and the intellectual foundation necessary to prepare for a career as a legal professional.
Course Structure
The LLB is a three-year course in which the core law subjects are covered as well as a number of elective subjects. The course offered by SETU Carlow is a qualifying degree in that it is approved by the relevant legal professional bodies.

In the pharmaceutical industry, for example, analytical chemists are involved throughout the drug development process to help determine the quality and stability of drug products.

Lectures and laboratory practical work cover aspects of modern pharmaceutical and formulation development such as the preparation and stress testing of products.

Think of all those products you use every day, mobile phones, headphones, sports equipment, cars, medical devices, apps and so much more.
Product design as a disciple sits between Art and Engineering where creativity is let loose to explore and invent new ways of doing things and then making them real. Be inspired by product designers like Ross Lovegrove, Dieter Rams, Neri Oxman, Hartmut Esslinger and Monika Mulder.
On the course you learn the skills of being a designer, sketching, model making/prototyping, creative problem solving, visual communication and working as part of a team. You will be using programmes like Solidworks, Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design and more.
This course was the first of its kind nationally and has 50+ years’ experience in design education. We use studio-based education, a dedicated space where students work together on their designs and learn through making and doing. The student staff ratio is approx. 1:10 which means you get very high contact time with lecturers supporting and guiding you through your design development.

Construction Managers must have a deep understanding of Construction Technology and the Construction Process. They must apply expert Project Management skills to manage challenging multi-faceted projects. They must be able to Plan, Organise and Coordinate as well as have strong Problem Solving and People Management skills.
Construction Managers work for Building Contractors, Project Management Consultants and directly for large clients. There are excellent Career prospects for Construction Managers with an expanding Irish economy ensuring a strong ongoing demand.

Civil Engineering
Civil Engineers design, construct and maintain the Built Environment on which our modern societies depend. Civil Engineering includes our Roads, the Supply of Safe Water, Sewage and Wastewater treatment, our Buildings and our Bridges, our Railways, our Airports and Electricity Generation. Ensuring that we Protect our Natural Environment while maintaining this critical infrastructure in a Sustainable manner is an increasingly important part of what Civil Engineers do.
The work of Civil Engineers is all around us. Prominent examples of Civil Engineering projects around the globe include the Brooklyn Bridge, the Hoover Dam, the Panama Canal, the Ardnacrusha Hydroelectric Scheme, the Channel Tunnel joining England and France, the towering Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the London Underground System. Years 1 and 2 introduce students to essential business areas such as economics, management, IT, accounting, mathematics, marketing and fundamental legal subjects relevant to business such as: Contract Law and Tort Law. Years 3 and 4 have a strong emphasis on core management competencies (Year 3), strategic management, international aspects of business (Year 4) complemented by legal knowledge and skills relevant to these areas in subjects such as: Company Law, Employment Law, Media Law and the Digital Environment, Consumer Law and EU Law. This course provides maximum flexibility to students.
